2025-26 Application Process

Systems Change Fellowship

For LA-based systems change initiatives led by those with lived experience of the issues they’re tackling.

Due May 14th

Over nine months, this fellowship brings together nonprofit leaders who have lived experience of the issues they're addressing. Leaders connect with each other, share resources, and collaborate. Together they hone their strategy, explore liberatory team culture practices, and expand their relationships and resources. When leaders build meaningful connections across justice movements, they create powerful networks that drive lasting systemic change.

Overview

How it works

The Systems Change Fellowship supports LA-based nonprofit initiatives led by those with lived experience of the systemic issues they’re tackling.

The program focuses on peer-learning and relationship building, connecting as a part of the interwoven landscape of social justice in Los Angeles. Our cohort members tackle a wide range of interconnected systemic issues through policy advocacy, narrative and culture shift, and building power.

The 2025-26 cohort will present their stories at SJPLA’s 2026 Story of Us LA, inviting hundreds of guests to join their work towards a more just and loving Los Angeles. The event comes at the end of a ten-week training process supported by SJPLA coaches.

Monthly convenings run from September to May.

For more details, join our Information Session on April 30th.

Eligibility Requirements

The below criteria must be met to be eligible for the Systems Change Fellowship:

Organizational Criteria

Nonprofit Organization

Applicants must have a designation from the IRS as a 501(c)3 organization, or proof of fiscal sponsorship.

Location

We have a strong preference for LA-based organizations. If you’re part of a national organization or are headquartered elsewhere, you are still invited to apply. Tell us how your program significantly impacts LA County.

Systems Change Focus

The initiative must have a systems change focus, rather than a direct service focus. Direct services often provide much-needed individual-level support, such as temporary or permanent housing, mentoring, training, or food banks. For the focus of this fellowship, we seek leaders of systems change initiatives that address the root causes of injustice by engaging people across the system to shift power, policy, and mindsets. Systems change work acknowledges the problem's complex history and it improves the lives of the people most impacted by the issue for the long term.

Our systems change  definition is inspired in part by FSG’s “The Water of Systems Change” and Marina Kim’s “Rethinking the Impact Spectrum”.

Applicant Criteria

Organization Representative

The individual participating in the Systems Change Fellowship on behalf of their organization must hold the title of Executive Director, initiative Program Director, or equivalent position with significant organization-wide decision-making responsibility and should have at least six months of tenure with the organization. Participants should work or live in LA County in order to utilize the coaching resources available.

Lived experience

The individual participating in the Systems Change Fellowship should have direct, lived experience of the issue their initiative is solving. As the Systems Change Fellowship is not issue specific, we look to applicants to define and tell us their relationship to the system they seek to transform. For example, we define “direct, lived experience of homelessness” as someone who has been unhoused, unsheltered, or who may have experienced a lack of stable, safe, and adequate housing.

Ability to participate in all workshop dates

Applicants must be able to attend all workshop dates outlined. The majority of the workshops are in Los Angeles, with few being virtual.

Background

The 2025-26 Systems Change Fellows will be SJPLA’s eighth cohort. To date, 55 leaders have gone through the nine-month program.

We invest in and amplify systems change initiatives and leaders working to dismantle oppressive systems and create a liberatory Los Angeles. Systems change work addresses the root causes of pressing social problems, creating change in underlying inequitable structures by shifting policies, processes, resources, and power structures.

We recognize that social justice work is interdependent and interconnected; too often, the work is siloed. The Systems Change Fellowship aims to foster connections between initiatives dismantling and rebuilding structures that serve all Angelenos.
